Summer Beach Splash & Blast Campout

Our summer beach camp this year was at our local beach in Carlsbad and it was a Splash & Blast to remember!

Some of the things we got to do were boogie boarding, swimming , beach games , cooking, advancement opportunities , camp fire, skits and overnight camping and we had the honor to retire two American flags while we were there .

Summer Camp Chawanakee 2021

Camping was so much fun! Scouts were able to participate in a week long camping at Camp Chawanakee at Shaver Lake , Ca . Scouts worked on merit badges: swimming, kayaking, camping, cooking , sailing, emergency preparedness , archery, astronomy, robotics, welding, woodcarving, horsemanship, fishing, shooting . Scouts participated in Chawanakee volunteer hours, played games, conducted a skit, pioneer project, Chief Run ( 1 mile run 6am ), Iron Bear Swim ( jump lake after the mile run 6:30 ) and many more events .

During the evening ceremony a Scout Commissioner selects the troop of choice to receive the thumb stick based on the positive performance on the daily evaluation scoring sheet and each troop then contributes an item to the stick and returns it the next day. The troop to receive it back on Friday( last day camp) would get to keep the thumb stick.
Troop 669 was able to receive the thumb stick 3 times in a row , as a result, Troop 669 was able to keep the thumb stick and bring it back to Escondido !

Congratulations to Troop 669 for receiving an Honor Ribbon and a special recognition to Joe O’Connor for being the recipient of the Chawanakee Honor Troop award .

More Virtual Happenings in Troop 669

Over the last few weeks, Troop 669 has been getting creative with virtual meetings, and has done many fun and entertaining virtual activities. Last weekend, our troop went on a virtual campout- everyone set up their tents, ate dinner, showed their campsites to others, and went to bed, all on a zoom call. Last Monday was the iron chef challenge- where budding chefs competed against one another cooking dishes using three ingredients- canned protein, carrots, and butter. “It was so cool!” An attendee of both events said. “I’m excited for our next virtual meeting.”

In February, our scouts enjoyed a spirited day of snow, skis, snowboards, and sleds when we took a trip to Snow Valley. After getting fitted with special boots and picking up our rented ski poles and snowboards, it was all uphill- quickly followed by downhill, of course- from there. For many, it was the first time they had ever tried a snow sport. Everyone learned quickly, however, and soon, all of our scouts were racing down the slopes. Even some siblings of scouts and friends of siblings of scouts joined the fun!  After learning how to ski and snowboard (the two options provided by Snow Valley) a few scouts ventured up another hill to go sledding, and some even tried to have a snowball fight on the way down. “We put snow in our sleds at the beginning, and tried to hurl it at each other on the way down,” said one scout. “It was great fun.”
